About Us

The British & Commonwealth Society of Rio de Janeiro is a non-profit civil association dedicated to charitable, cultural, social and recreational activities. Financially and administratively independent, the Society exists to support, connect and enrich the British and Commonwealth community in Rio de Janeiro, while fostering friendship, understanding and meaningful engagement within the wider Brazilian community.

Our Properties

Thanks to generous donations made during the first half of the twentieth century, the British community in Rio de Janeiro owns the historic property at Rua Real Grandeza 99, Botafogo. Today, the site is home to Christ Church, The British School and the British & Commonwealth Society (BCS). It also provides a base for a variety of community, cultural and religious organisations, including Freemasons, AA and Al-Anon groups, choirs and other local associations.

Charity

Charity begins at home, but true generosity reaches beyond it. The British & Commonwealth Society of Rio de Janeiro is proud to support social programmes that benefit Brazilians of all ages from less privileged backgrounds, while also promoting the arts and cultural initiatives that enrich our wider community.

Our History

The British Community Council was established in 1948. In 1966, under the chairmanship of the late Peter Fontaine OBE, the organisation adopted its present name and became the British & Commonwealth Society of Rio de Janeiro.
